 Lenna Kuurmaa was born on 26 September of 1985 in the capital of Estonia - Tallinn. Her mother Sirji and father Tönu decided to move from Harjumaa (district of Tallinn) to the centre of the biggest city in Estonia after Lenna was born. As Lenna said, when she was 6 years old, she wanted to be a famous singer, but her parents didn't like her music plans. "They wanted me to become somebody, whose career in show business will be sure. Being a singer, as my mother says, leans on being at the top and every moment of glitter and flash can finish" said Lenna, "Yes, they wanted the best for me, but I didn't give up. Finally they believed in my passion and they let me me participate in contests". And then everything started to change. Lenna performed on the stage more often. She acted in the musicals "King and I" and "The Sound of Music". One of the greatest successes was being in the semi-final of "Fizz Superstar". She didn't win but was noticed by Sven Lõhmus from native label - TopTen, which helped her in her career. In high school (Lenna went to the same school as Maarja), she resigned from contests. She decided to go on every music casting in Tallinn. With her friend Maarja Kivi they won a casting for a girlband with Katrin Siska and Piret Järvis. That's how Vanilla Ninja was set up. Firstly the girls performed in pubs, clubs and festivals in Estonia. "The beginnings always are difficult and it was hard for me especially the connection between the band and school. When Vanilla Ninja was created I concentrated more on career in Estonia than on my school work.  My grades were getting worse and worse and my parents told me that if my grades didn’t get better, I would have to leave the group" said Lenna. So when problems began and Lenna had to choose between school and the band, she decided to show everybody, that she’s a superstar, who also has good grades in school: "I didn't stop performing, I loved it and I tried to learn more. I remember that with every performance I had my school books with me".
But it was worth it as Vanilla Ninja released a CD, participated in Estonian pre-selections for Eurovision, where David Brandes noticed them and Lenna's average from grades in her last year at high school was 5.0. "Goodbye Estonia!" - that's how Lenna reacted when David proposed to them for an international career. After the release of "Traces Of Sadness" Lenna and Vanilla Ninja became famous in central Europe and when Maarja left the group, she became the main singer. When Maarja left VN she didn't say good things about Lenna. Then Maarja was replaced by Triinu. After release of "Blue Tattoo" problems with David Brandes started. Lenna, Katrin, Piret and Triinu renounced the contract and found new label. "Now everything is better! We write lyrics and even music! We have recorded some songs with David, but he wanted to do everything himself. I wasn't happy when "My Puzzle Of Dreams" song was plagiarism, because I gave all my heart to lyrics. The worst of course was that one of fans told me it was plagiarism, not our producer. Now we decide about our music ourselves! Finally it's our music" says Lenna. |
